현대 문화와 돈 그리고 개인 -짐멜(G. Simmel)의 『돈의 철학』에 나타난 문화와 돈의 관계를 중심으로-

문화의 문제를 적어도 물질적인 차원에까지 확장시키고, 특히 돈과 연결시킨 이가 있으니 그가 바로 게오르그 짐멜(Georg Simmel 1858-1918)이다. 짐멜은 칸트의 인식이론을 연구하여 철학박사학위를 받았으며, 이후 문화철학, 미학, 사회학 등의 분야로 연구 영역을 확장시켰다. 이 글은 짐멜의 문화철학 혹은 문화관을 통해 자본주의 시대의 문화의 본질을 밝혀내고, 그 속에서 돈과 문화 그리고 개인과의 관련성을 해명하는 데 일차적인 목적이 있다. 이를 위해서 필자는 먼저 짐멜의 문화철학의 사회학적 착상을 살펴본다. 다음으로 그의 대표적인 문화철학 관련 저서인 『돈의 철학』을 집중적으로 분석하여 돈과 문화의 관련성을 해명하도록 한다. 여기에서는 주관문화와 객관문화의 갈등 관계, 노동 분업을 통한 객관문화의 우위 현상, 이에 따른 현대인의 소외 문제 등을 다루도록 한다. 마지막으로는 짐멜의 돈의 철학에 나타나는 문화관의 현재적 의미를 되짚어 보면서 전체 논의를 갈음하도록 한다.
Abstract
Georg Simmel(1858-1918) is famous for an outstanding philosopher of culture in German. Especially his concept of culture has not only spiritual but also material aspects. It is very important in respect of understanding of culture in era of capitalism. This article aims to reveal the essence of culture and the relation about culture and money in era of capitalism through his philosophy of culture. In order to this purpose, firstly we will discuss Simmel's sociological thought in philosophy of culture. Nextly we will concentrically analyze his works Philosophy of Money and elucidate the relation about culture and money. In this part, we will discuss about the subjective culture and objective culture, it's conflict, division of labour work, and alienation of human being. Lastly we will estimate Simmel's view-points of culture.
