Abstract
Traditionally, pictures of mountains and waters have been important in the East. They began to draw attention in spiritual terms especially when Zongbing(宗炳) and Wangwei(王微) during the Age of Wei Jin Nan Bei dynasty advocated the theory of landscape painting and since then, have developed as an important genre that connects the nature of the universe and humans. Since the Northern Song dynasty, in particular, mountains and waters became an area of painting which is essential for the formation of personality and communication with nature. Like this, they were not only included in the realm of painting, but also played a pivotal role in relation to the rationality and affection of the universe. Rationality and affection, key to the formation of the order of nature and human personality has been considered important given the value of a human being. This is what makes the Oriental world different from the West in terms of perspectives. In the East, unlike the West which is based on reason, the world of rationality and affection has been thought of as an important foundation for the order of the universe and as the core of human personality. As key philosophical, literary, and aesthetic concepts that link the universe to humans, rationality and affection, by definition, can be seen as the essence of humans and nature. Unlike landscape paintings of the West to which science and perspective are important, those of the East are characterized by being imaginary based on rationality and affection as well as real state. However, the ideas of Chinese landscape painting are defined by reason, rationality, spirituality, and inspiration of landscape painting. Accordingly, it is worthy to note that landscape paintings of the East sought spiritual expression based on rationality or reason, rather than imagery effects based on visual, formative imagination that pursued by landscape painters of the West. As discussed earlier, the fact that it is hard to find the willingness of expressing a kind of spirituality or the truth of nature from Western landscape paintings tells us how deeply the aesthetic category of superficial representation of reality based on science in perspective which they have sought for so far have affected. Their misguided belief that they could conquer nature has prevented them from opening their heart to nature and communicating with it.The nature of universe is not easy to be revealed to humans how hard they try. Like this, landscape paintings of the East serve as a medium for humans to figure out the nature of the universe, and painting the appearance of actual mountains was not very important. To paint the form which can be made by communicating with the spirit of humans, the nature of indefinite universe was considered important, which is an important aestheticism that makes Oriental landscape paintings fundamentally different from those of the West based on reason.
