간접흡연의 새로움

초록

흡연의 해로움이 과학적으로 입증된 시기는 1950년대 초반이었지만 간접흡연의 해로움은 80년대부터 조금씩 알려지기 시작했고, 최근에 더 많은 근거들이 누적되고 있다. 2006년 미국에서 간접흡연에 대한 기존의 지식을 망라하여 The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke라는 제목의 Surgeon General Report가 발간되었다. 간접흡연은 태아의 발육을 억제하고, 영아돌연사증후군을 일으키며, 아동에서 기관지천식, 중이염을 유발한다. 또한 간접흡연은 폐암을 비롯한 각종 암을 일으키고, 심혈관질환과 뇌혈관 질환의 위험인자이다. 간접흡연은 폐에도 영향을 미쳐 기도폐쇄성 질환을 유발한다. 흡연규제는 간접흡연의 피해를 줄이는 가장 중요한 조치라고 할 수 있다. 더구나 공공장소에서의 흡연 규제는 간접흡연을 피할 수 있을 뿐 아니라 흡연율을 낮추는 효과도 있다. 우리나라는 법적으로 규제되는 금연구역도 제대로 지켜지지 않는 경우가 많은데 법의 엄격한 시행이 필요하며 외국에서와 같이 보다 광범위한 조치가 필요한 시점으로 판단된다.
