Abstract

Nonviolent philosophy comes in many shapes and sizes, from simple opposition to war, to belief systems encompassing a total way of life. In fact, many of the claims of nonviolence are overblown and must be reconsidered. It is true that nonviolent tactics are effective at some times and in some places. But at other times nonviolence is ineffective; a principled insistence on nonviolence can in some circumstances be dangerous to progressive social movements. As for nonviolent philosophy, its vision of a cooperative, peaceful world is certainly worth preserving. But the theory is troubled by moral dogma and mechanical logic. In this study we would investigate the claims of non-violence theory and its moral implication. And after considering the difficulties of non-violence movement especially in its gap between theory and its practical application, we introduce the Gandhi's non-violence movement as th example of the philosophical or moral movement for the social change. According to Gandhi, <Satyagraha> means the pursuit of truth and at the same time the life based on it. And it could be seen as the theoretical ground for the <Ahimsa>. <Ahimsa> means non-violence literally, but for him, it means divine and spiritual power which is immanent in human being. In this point of view it is not the negative attitude which simply doesn't hurt others, but the most extensive love and the greatest compassion in a positive sense. As for him. it is not only the positive power which could sacrifice oneself according to truth but also the most effective methods which could be used to change the society.
