‘악의 문제’에 대한 맥키와 플란팅가의 논쟁

전능하고 선한 신의 존재와 악의 존재가 양립 불가능함을 지적하는 '악의 문제'는 매우 설득력 있는 논증이기는 하나 기독교 신앙에 치명적인 문제는 아니었다. 선한 존재가 악을 모두 제거하지 않을 이유, 기독교 신학의 원리에 부합하는 이유를 제시하는 일은 간단한 일은 아니라 해도 불가능한 일은 아니었기 때문이다. 그러나 죤 맥키는 악의 문제가 기독교적 유일 신앙이 불합리한 믿음임을 보여준다고 주장한다. 악의 문제가 기독교의 본질적인 내용을 훼손하지 않고서는 포기할 수 없는, 그러나 결코 동시에 참일 수 없는 명제들의 집합을 제시한다는 것이다. 이에 대하여 앨빈 플란팅가는 현대 논리학의 도구를 빌어 '모순'의 유형을 구분하는 한편, 맥키가 필요로 하는 보조 전제를 찾는 일이 끊임없는 반례에 부딪히게 됨을 보임으로써 맥키의 주장에 대응하려 한다. 이 논문은 플란팅가의 변론에 공감하면서, 이 두 분석철학자에 의해서 전개된 '악의 문제'를 둘러싼 논쟁을 개념적인 부분에 주목하면서 추적하고 정리한다.
Abstract
The Problem of Evil, which points out the incompatibility between the existence of perfectly good and omnipotent being on the one hand and the presence of evil on the other, offers a cogent, even if not fatal, argument against Christian Theism. It is cogent because it validly deduces the absence of evil from, at least prima facie, acceptable premises; it however is not fatal because one of its premises can be negated without compromising Theistic beliefs. John Mackie thinks otherwise: he argues that the problem of evil shows the irrationality of Christian Theism because it gives a set of statements which can not be abandoned by Christian Theists but which are mutually incompatible. Alvin Plantinga, using the tools of modern logic, responds Mackie. Plantinga distinguishes the types of contradictions and shows that Mackie's set of statements in itself does not imply any type of contradiction. Then he argues the auxiliary premises Mackie needs is not necessary truth in any sense.
