Abstract

Several decades of researchers have elucidated the process by which pain signals transmitted from the periphery are sent to the brain and that descending pain control mechanisms can be regulated by psychosocial or behavioral factors. Pain is a physical experience caused by the physiological sense of pain, and suffering is subjective experience. The subject of the experience dictactes whether the pain stimulus will be experienced only through nociception or pain, or pain with suffering. Since the degree of pain also depends greatly on the psychological and social context, the cognitive, emotional, and social factors should be considered in an integrated manner to control pain. It has been confirmed that various psychosocial and behavioral interventions can alleviate pain and suffering. Such interventions are consistent with Buddhist practices and Buddha's teachings. In this study, the physiological mechanism that relieves pain and suffering through mindfulness, meditation as relaxation medicine, healing from the four immeasurable minds and social connection through the religious community are reviewed based on the principles of mind-body medicine and psychoneuroimmunology. Further research is expected in which Buddhist practices and the teachings of Buddha will be newly appreciated as social and cultural capital that can contribute to improving the mental and physical health and quality of life of people, and to seek practical cooperation with the health care system and social welfare system.
