Abstract
The Labanotation has a explicit limit for applying to Korean folk dance. This represents not only the flow of ki(氣, life energy in universe), which is never so easy to interpret by that notation but dancer's spirit and Korean thoughts. The purpose of this thesis is to construct a notation system by operating the kinemes in Korean folk dance and to interpret it systematically. I apply Peirce's ideas and Hwajaeng-Semiotic to this study. Firstly Peirce's semiotic triangle is applied to analyze various kinesic movements in Korean folk dance; the spirits and matters of Korean folk dance substitutes for object in his terms, kinemes for representamen and meaning for interpretant. Thus I understand the process of semiosis related to the spirits and matters of Korean folk dance, kinemes, and meaning. Korean folk dance is different from the western. Because the dance is culture and this is based on Korean thought, attitude and bodies. While Koreans eat hot soup, they say “it is cool". This is somewhat puzzling to Westerners. It is quite difficult for people who view hot and cool as opposing concepts to comprehend. Western thinking is based on substantialism and binary opposition. However, the delicious taste is ‘hot-coolness’ for Korean. Like this, Korean folk dance is based on the paradigm of Hwajaeng. If western binary opposition philosophy constructs dams and harms life and water, Hwajaeng's ‘not one not two either’ philosophy razes the dam and lets the water flow its course to keep man alive and man keeps the water alive. So, I applied Hwajaeng Semiotics to Korean folk dance. This kinesic code permits to visualize the Korean dance motions and lines as well as to understand more perfectly its meaning system. And the code, based on semiotic objectivity, will be generally applied on any other Korean dances for explore their classifications, meanings so far as thought,
