Choreographing Multiple Corporealities in the Sinophone World* - A Comparative Study of Works by Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan, City Contemporary Dance Company from Hong Kong, and Shen Wei Dance Arts in New York -

Abstract

This comparative study researches the select choreographies of three Sinophone dancecompanies, namely Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, City Contemporary Dance Company, andShen Wei Dance Arts. All three choreographers—namely Lin Hwai-min, Willy Tsao, andShen Wei respectively—incorporate various traditional bodily trainings yet merge themwith contemporary aesthetics in their own unique ways. Furthermore, due to their ownhistorical backgrounds and geopolitical situatedness, their works critique upon the citieswhere they are based. In other words, this paper reflects on the current contemporarydance scene in Taipei, Hong Kong, and New York, arguing for multiple corporealitiesthrough bodily writing.
