초록
This study aims to understand the characteristics and mode of Spanish domination in colonial America through the “Virreinato” or viceroyalty system. Virreinato was the most fundamental system of colonial rule, and it guaranteed the sovereignty and authority of the Spanish monarchy in colonial America. The virrey had almost absolute power in America. However, the Spanish king was able to control him through various institutions and process such as the Consejo de Indias and the Audiencia. In addition, this study shows that during the entire period of colonial rule, the Virreinato and Audiencia were closely connected under the colonial domination structure. Furthermore, thanks to the Virreinato, Spain could become a world empire that governed efficiently in territories far from the home capital. In this respect, the examination of the Virreinato provides an understanding of Spanish colonial rule itself.
