Abstract

Since the Fourth Industrial Revolution, various forms and expressions have emerged beyond the combination of genres in the performing art of dance. Technological advancements and the development of various content have led to the evolution of archiving methods. This study aims to investigate the utilization of photographic archives as a visual material for dance choreography. Through in-depth interviews with choreographers who have incorporated photography into their works, this research examines the themes, movements, stage directing, and plot development inspired by photographic techniques. The findings indicate that dance choreography using photography offers several advantages. Firstly, it serves as a shared material for communication and empathy. Secondly, the specific characteristics and techniques inherent in photography can be expanded in the dance composition process. Thirdly, it provides direction in the creative process to reach the theme and concept of the work. And finally, it can be utilized as a valuable element for conveying ideas in the collaborative creation process. This research highlights the potential of dance choreography using photography to develop advanced forms, expand creation methods, and transform completed dance performances. Subsequent research should focus on developing a systematic creative process for dance performances that emphasizes the importance of conceptual approaches.
