This paper constructs economic integration index to examine the determinants of regional integration of MERCOSUR and the Pacific Alliance (PA). We make integration index that consider intra-regional trade and supply chains. The results can be broadly summarized as follows: Firstly, political and institutional variables, which have been often overlooked in previous studies, are found to be important factors in the integration. Additionally, improvements in the political and institutional environment enhance both intra and extra-regional integration of the two trading blocs. Secondly, the promotion of intra-regional integration in the PA is found to also enhance extra-regional integration, whereas for MERCOSUR, the promotion of intra-regional integration hinders extra-regional integration. Thirdly, in the case of the PA, improvements in integration of regional supply chain lead to an increase in trade with extra-regional countries.
