Abstract
Most of renewable energies have disadvantage of uneven electric-power generation depending on time and weather conditions. CAES (Compressed Air Energy Storage) system stores compressed air in an underground cavern using surplus power. Then, the compressed air is used to produce electric-power when power-supply is needed. The core of CAES applicability is guarantee of airtightness of the storage. In this study, the effectiveness of a cavern for CAES in Korea is analyzed. In a standard case studied, 6.9% cavern pressure loss is observed after 24 hours. Through sensitivity analyses, to have less than 5% of pressure loss after 1 day, permeability of lining should be lower than 10-9 cm/s or rock depth be deeper than 100 m or permeability of rock be lower than 10-6 cm/s. The results of cross sensitivity analyses show that there is a relationship between rock depth and groundwater level for hydrostatic pressure. Even if rock depth becomes deeper, it does not provide sufficient pressure conservation, so permeability of rock is set lower than 10-5 cm/s. Although thickness of lining becomes thicker, its permeability should be lower than 10-9 cm/s for less than 5% pressure loss.
