Abstract
Mine leachate discharge from mine waste rocks and tailings can cause many environmental problems when it is transported to soils and streams around mining areas. The purpose of this study is to analyze the mine leachate pathway with time using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Digital Elevation Model (DEM), soil map, and land cover map were used to account for the effective rainfall and temporal variation of surface discharges. A new method which considers the measured hourly rainfall data was proposed to analyze the water level fluctuation and mine leachate migration. The application to the Samgwang mine showed that mine leachate from some areas with tailings-impoundment can flow into the Sindae reservoir. It is expected that the proposed method can be effectively used to analyze and prioritize the areas where detailed investigation is required for mine reclamation.
