Abstract
The objectives of this study are to develop asbestos removal equipment using friability of soils, and to evaluate its in-situ application. Removal equipment for friable asbestos in soils using wind blowing system was invented and two representative sites with over 1% and less 1% of asbestos in soils were examined for field application. The total removal amount of air asbestos scattered from high level of asbestos in soil was 117.9 f/cc at 30 times trials and 50% of the friable asbestos was removed at 6 times. Eventually, asbestos level in the soil was decreased up to 1%. In addition to low concentration of asbestos in soil, the total removal amount of air asbestos scattered from soil was 24.4 f/cc at 30 times and 50% of the friable asbestos was removed at 8 times. Consequently 50% of friable asbestos in soils can be removed by 5~10 times trials using the equipment with 0.5m/s at 10m2 contaminated site. Because the maximum removal amount of asbestos in fibrous particles was 0.4 f/cc, a scale-up for the equipment is needed to enhance the removal ability of friable asbestos in soils.
