Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the availability of mineral carbonation using industrial by-products, that are capable of reducing the amount of CO2 in gas generated from solid waste landfills. With this objective, we first investigated the reduction of CO2 obtained using different types of industrial waste containing alkaline earth metals, as well as the effect of water on this process. Second, we compared the CO2 reductions obtained using these types of industrial waste. Third, elemental composition and DSC–TGA analyses were carried out to investigate the chemical reactions linked to CO2 reduction. The reduction of CO2 hardly occurred at 30°C (a temperature that simulated the landfill environment). The DSC–TGA thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated the occurrence of weight loss over the temperature range of carbonate mineral decomposition; moreover, the total amount of CO2 was 2.84 wt%, corresponding to 28.4 g CO2/kg of solidified sludge. Overall, these data confirmed the occurrence of CO2 reduction as a result of mineral carbonation.
