Abstract
Detection of the boundary between pulp and froth is critical to controlling the flotation process and developing excellent automated mineral processing systems. The amount of pulp, air, and reagent affects the grade and capacity of products and is determined by the level of the boundary. This paper suggests a practical method to detect the boundary by measuring electrical resistance. A froth generator in laboratoryis used to characterize electrical resistance for various conditions. Then, electrodes and a data acquisition system are designed in the view of fast response, which is an important factor in automated mineral processing. Two methods to detect the boundary using the electrical resistance and ratio are suggested and validated by application to a typical flotation process. The proposed methods are expected to achieve excellent process automation, thereby, maximizing production capacity.
