Abstract

In this study, a router-drop-based robot teleoperation system for unconnected underground mines is developed. The developed system comprises robot-teleoperation, wireless-communication, and router-drop systems. The robot is teleoperated using Wi-Fi at the entrance of a mine. When the Wi-Fi signal weakens, the router is dropped to extend the communication range, and the connection with the computer at the mine entrance continues to proceed smoothly. The robot uses a thermal imaging camera to locate victims and sends a signal upon detection, thus allowing the victim’s location to be confirmed by the computer. The application of the developed system confirmed that a mesh network used in conjunction with robot teleoperation based on the router-drop method is feasible in underground mines located approximately 110 m deep. The system allows one to safely investigate abandoned mines and nuclear disaster sites without communication networks. Additionally, it can be utilized for exploring lunar lava caves.
