Abstract

This study comprehensively examines the technical, economic, and institutional feasibility of under ground ammonia storage by analyzing the physical and chemical characteristics of ammonia. Owing to its high hydrogen-storage density, mild liquefaction conditions, and carbon-free combustion, ammonia is emerging as a key medium in the hydrogen economy, particularly for underground energy storage and associated regulatory frameworks. The study also explores the applicability of various storage models, including rock caverns, vertical shaft-based systems, and centrally controlled multi- shaft systems. By reviewing the site-selection criteria, regulatory challenges, and economic viability, this study highlights the necessity for institutional refinement and pilot-scale demonstrations for the future deployment of ammonia underground storage technologies.
