An innovative method for assessing the safety of transport containers for radioactive material was developed to overcome the limitations of traditional full-scale and scaled-down drop tests. By focusing on equivalent test models that accurately reflect the actual dimensions and characteristics of the containers, this approach addresses the challenges of evaluating containers with internal contents such as waste bags, where traditional methods fail to provide accurate safety assessments. The approach focuses on the impact resistance of container contents by utilizing equivalent test models for a comprehensive safety evaluation. Digital image correlation techniques were employed to measure the rigid body motion of containers during the drop tests, providing a basis for verifying the kinematic accuracy of the analytical models. This method was applied to a container with waste bags as contents. It was found that there was no loss of the sealing function of waste bags and no damage occurred to the compartment walls and welded parts of the transport container. This method is applicable to a wide range of contents where constructing scaled models or conducting analytical assessments is impractical.
