초록
The history of art patronage and collecting has now been firmly established as a burgeoning area of research in art history, and countless articles, books, and even a respectable journal have been devoted to the subject. As a result, an unprecedented amount of knowledge has been accumulated on individual or institutional patrons and collectors in various countries throughout the entire human history. There are, nevertheless, huge gaps in our understanding of past collections which often do not exist anymore or exist in much different form from their original contexts. This study is an attempt to fill the gap by providing an incomplete preliminary account of one such neglected English aristocratic family of patrons and collectors, namely, the Grosvenors. Based on newly discovered archival sources as well as published materials, this essay focuses in particular on the achievements of the first two Grosvenors who founded an aristocratic dynasty and the germ of their art collection in the long eighteenth century. In doing so, it seeks to throw some fresh light on the cultural politics of art patronage and collecting.
