Abstract
In early 20th century China, art historians used terminology for Chinese painting theory that was coined by Western translations. One representative example for this is the interpretation and translation of the concept qiyun shengdong in the work Guhua pinlu by Xie He (active in the early 6th century). Western scholars translated this concept, which is essential but also ambiguous in meaning, in diverse ways when describing the characteristics of Chinese art. Among those, the term “rhythmic vitality,” as Herbert Giles (1845-1935) translated it in 1905, was accepted by contemporary Chinese scholars and became a defining feature of Chinese art. Scholars such as Teng Gu (1901-1941), Liu Haisu (1896-1994), and Zong Baihua (1897-1986) interpreted qiyun as “life with rhythm,” which reveals Giles’ influence. In other words, the Western scholars’ understanding of qiyun as “rhythm” formulated the characteristics of Chinese art in the transnational academic world at the time. But Giles’ interpretation, which focuses on shengdong rather than qiyun, was criticized by later scholars. George Rowley (1892-1962), Alexander Soper (1904-1993), and James Cahill (1926-2014) emphasized that qiyun was the most important part of the concept qiyun shengdong. Consequently, they translated qiyun as “spirit resonance” or “spirit consonance.” This case demonstrates how important translation and interpretation are for art history and how they can lead to modifications of art theory. After all, when research achievements are shared worldwide, we have to be mindful about changes of art theory that are caused by different translations.
