Abstract

Why do gift giving behaviors occur in romantic relationship? I argue that gift giving in romantic relationship can be construed as strategic behaviors aimed to enhance each sex’s reproductive fitness. With evolutionary psychology used as the theoretical framework, gender differences in gift giving behaviors and dynamic changes in gift giving motives were investigated drawing upon four stages of romantic relationship development: Courtship, mutual commitment, women struggle(or adjustment), and equilibrium (or termination). 20 college women were depth-interviewed. As expected, the distinct types of gift giving behaviors for both sexes were revealed corresponding to the respective stage of the romantic relationship. The ultimate explanations underpinning the various types of gift giving of both sexes were provided
