Abstract

Recent research shows that women’s consumer behavior shifts across different phases of the monthly ovulatory cycle. For example, women at peak fertility (near ovulation) prefer more revealing and sexy clothing and spend more money on appearance-enhancing products. Unfortunately, however, the target audience of ovulating women’s beautification behavior has been identified unclear within the consumer research literature. Using a survey, we first examined why ovulation influences women’s preference of sexy clothing style with two variables (i.e., mating, and intrasexual competition, mindset) employed as mediating variables at the same time. The result showed that the indirect effect of ovulation status on the preference of sexy style through intrasexual competition mindset was significant, but the indirect effect through mating mindset was not significant. We further examined whether the intrasexual competition mindset would mediate the relationship between ovulation status and willingness-to-pay(WTP) for appearance-enhancing products. We found that the indirect effect of ovulation status on WTP for the products through intrasexual competition mindset was still significant. The findings of this study propose that the target audience of ovulating women’s higher interest, and more spending, on appearance-related products might be same-sex rivals, not men.
