Abstract
Colleges that support early employment through short-term practical training exhibit higher dropout rates than universities. This study aims to systematically analyze the factors influencing dropout among students at colleges and to propose practical strategies for dropout prevention that take into account the unique characteristics of colleges. Administrative data were collected from 4,741 students who enrolled at College A, located in Metropolitan City D, between 2022 and 2024. Based on Kerby’s (2015) predictive model of student retention, the variables were categorized into pre-admission factors(admission type, high school GPA, age, gender), institutional factors(frequency of co-curricular program participation), and academic adjustment factors(number of leaves of absence, college GPA). The dependent variable was classified into persistence and dropout, and logistic regression analysis was conducted. The analysis revealed that all seven variables had statistically significant effects on student dropout. In particular, students admitted through regular or alternative admission tracks, female students, those with lower high school GPAs, students aged 25 or younger, those with low participation in co-curricular programs, and those with lower college GPAs were found to have higher dropout rates. The findings suggest the need for multidimensional support, including strengthened early diagnostics, expanded educational support for female students, promotion of participation in co-curricular programs, structured academic advising, targeted management of students with repeated leaves of absence, and the establishment of a data-driven dropout risk monitoring system led by the Institutional Research center.
