Abstract
Effects of the Iron Status on the Mental Health in Adolescent Female Athletes. Exercise Science, 13(3): 381-394. 2004. This study was investigated the effects of the iron status on the mental health in adolescent female athletes. The subjects were 79 adolescent female athletes aged from 12 to 18 years and were composed of field hockey players, badminton players, handball players and runners. Anemia was defined as blood hemoglobin concentration < 12g/㎗. Iron deficiency was defined as serum ferritin concentration <10 ng/ml or transferrin saturation(TS) < 10%. The diagnosis of Iron-deficiency anemia was established when low Hb level (Hb<12g/㎗) was associated with serum ferritin concentration <10ng/ml and/or TS <10%. The symptom Checklist-90-Revision(SCL-90-R) was used for the assessment of mental health. The prevalence of anemia was 29.4% in runners and 23.5% in hockey players and 22.2% in handball players and 20.0% in badminton players and was the highest in the runners. The prevalence of Iron-deficient anemia(IDA) was 29.4% in runners and 17.6% in hockey players and 22.2% in handball players and 10% in badminton players, and was the highest in the runners. The symptoms of mental health were not significantly different between anemia group and normal group in all sports. But All symptoms of mental health in anemic runners was lower than normal group but it was not significant. From the result, we concluded that the adolescent female runners were higher the prevalence of anemia and IDA because of the hemolysis due to footstrike and the gastrointestinal(GI) bleeding, but the anemia didn't impair the mental health in the adolescent female athletes.
