본 연구는 쉼터에서 거주한 북한이탈주민을 대상으로 쉼터에서의 생활경험이 남한사회 적응에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 탐색하였다. 본 연구에서는 해석학적 질적 연구방법(interpretive qualitative research)을 활용하였으며, 자료수집을 위해 연구참여자 총 7명과 개별심층면접을 실시하였다. 연구참여자는 북한이탈주민 쉼터퇴소 후 현재는 지역사회에서 거주하고 있는 북한이탈주민이다. 본 연구결과 핵심주제는 1)쉼터의 의미: “터닝 포인트” 2)안정적인 일자리 찾기 3)사회적 관계 심화 추구 4)정체성 재확립: 자아의 확장으로 도출되었다. 쉼터에서 생활하는 동안 북한이탈주민들은 가족적인 돌봄을 제공받았으며, 인생의 터닝 포인트가 될 긍정적인 경험을 했던것으로 드러났다. 그러나 쉼터퇴소 후 안정적인 정착을 위해 노력하지만 차별과 편견을 경험하고 부족한 지식과 기술로 노동시장 진입에 어려움을 겪게 된다. 한편 이질적인 문화를 극복하고새로운 사회적 관계를 형성하기 위해 노력한다. 남한사회 적응과정에서 직면하게 되는 다양한도전과 어려움을 겪으며 자신의 정체성을 재확립해 나가고 있었다. 본 연구는 북한이탈주민들의경험을 탐색함으로써 그들의 적응을 돕기 위한 방안을 모색하는데 의의가 있다
Abstract
This study targeted North Korean refugees who once lived in a shelter and explored how the experience of living at shelters affects their adjustment in South Korean society. For data collection, in-depth interviews with seven research participants were done individually. The research participants were North Korean refugees who currently live in local communities after leaving shelters for North Korean refugees. The research drew the key points as follows: 1)significance of shelter as “Turning point” 2)finding a stable job 3)seeking to deepen the social relationships 4)re-establishing identity: expanding of self. The research showed that during the shelter stay, North Korean refugees received family-like care and had a positive experience that can be a turning point in their lives. After they left the shelter, however, they encountered discrimination and prejudice, and experienced difficulty in entering the labor market due to lack of knowledge and skills although they strove for stable settlement. In the meantime, they tried to overcome the difference in culture and to establish new social relationships. They were re-establishing their identity while facing various challenges and difficulties in the process of adjusting in South Korean society. This study has its significance in that it searches strategies to support North Korean refugees’ adjustment by analyzing their experience.
