Abstract
Expressing fat-free mass (FFM) and body fat mass (FM) as percentages of body weight is unsatisfactory. The aims of this study were to establish reference norms for FFM index [FFM (kg)/height (m)2, or FFMI) and fat mass index [FM (kg)/height (m)2, or FMI] in a large population of healthy girls, to observe differences in these values in three age groups between 7 and 15 years, and to develop percentile distributions for these parameter. One thousand two hundred twenty-two girls with a wide spectrum of stature, body weight, and body composition underwent bioelectrical impedance analysis (BI) for the determination of FFM and FM. The reference norms (25th-75th percentile) for the FFMI (8.1-11.5) was significantly different in 3 age groups (7-9, 10-12, and 13-15 yrs) (p<.001). FMI increased by an average of 13.7% compared to an increase in BMI of 18.7%. FFMI and FMI have the advantage of expressing both aspects of body composition in common units. The data presented as percentiles can serve as reference in comparing a child's body composition to that of healthy children of the same gender. These body composition ranges can be used by clinicians and nutritionists as reference values for girls.
