Abstract
The elderly and aging are the priority issues in Korea these days and it is not too much to believe that Korea has become getting older. It is also true that society needs to prepare and tackle this aging issue to help the elders to have more healthy and vibrant life. How can the museum educate the elderly and is it worth it? As we saw the rise of the elderly in Korea society, the institutions of life-long learning such as museums are trying to approach them from vocation search education to culture and arts education. Particularly modern museums need to be active and approachable to solve social issues and one of their solution can be education programmes targeting for the aging groups. This research, therefore, are investigating Korean museums(and galleries) that are organising sessions for elders currently and total 10 national museums out of 39 and 5 public museums out of 241 seem to have light engagements with the aging groups in terms of museum educational sessions. This work then looks at the methods of enlarge the engagement with the senior groups in four ways that is already suggested by the current researchers; develop diverse sessions, connecting generation through the sessions, consider the way of developing more professional education for elderly and finally making a connection with influential elderly groups. Through several examples from all around the world, furthermore this research suggests more agendas apart from those four solutions. More sophisticated research should be carried out in order to understand the elderly and their carer’s satisfaction and meaning making. Also finally the museum should organise detailed evaluation and audience research for better development of museum sessions for the senior groups.
