Lee, H.J., Lee, J.P., Kim, H.S., Kwon, K.U., Oh, J.K. Preventive effects of swimming training in cold water on cerebral infarct volume and motor functions in MCAo rats. Exercise Science, 14(3): 417-428, 2005. The purpose of this study was to determine the preventive effects of previous swimming training in cold water on cerebral infarct volume and motor functions caused by middle cerebral artery occlusion(MCAo) in male rats. 42 Rats were divided into three groups: CS(swimming training in cold water, 24±1℃), NS(swimming training in normal temperature water, 34±1℃), C(control), and then divided into two groups by surgical treatment: M(MCAo) and S(Sham). For 7d before surgical treatments, free weight swimming during 30 min/d were completed. 4d after MCAo, brain were prepared for TTC staining and western blotting to assess infarct volume and Vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF) expression. Foot fault test, balance beam test and limb placing test were conducted to access motor functions at 3d after surgical treatments. The infarct volumes of MCS was significantly decreased than MC. The VEGF expression was significantly increased by swimming training in cold water whereas the VEGF expression was significantly increased in MCAo group(MCS and MNS) compared to Sham(SCS and SNS). The result of the motor function tests showed that pre-swimming training, especially in cold water, inhibit decreasing motor functions in MCAo. In conclusion, increased VEGF expression induced by swimming in cold water before MCAo, can prevent increase of infarct volume and deficiency of motor functions.
