Abstract
The purpose of this research is to decipher the developmental process of nationalism in Korean modern history, 1876-1910. Behavioral character of nationalism of the time, then, is the major area for analysis. This paper employs the analytic framework which is composed of four variables such as ‘ethnic sentiment,’ ‘patriotismnationalism,’ ‘group consciousness’ and ‘ideological orientation.’ Then, the analysis gets into examining the co-relations of different thoughts, articulations, organizational movements that share in common with the anti-imperialist nature of nationalism of the time. Some of research findings are as follows: First, Korean nationalism has been developed in the mode of aggregating process by various actors interacting under the complex relationship among the nationalist thoughts and nationalist movements. Second, (1) the character of the ‘nationalistic’ was formed through self-recognition of the cultural identity (ethnic sentiment), (2) the consciousness of nation-state expanded national organizations and movements in terms of modern concept (patriotism), (3) diffused group movements became consolidated into the national ideology of nation-building after 1905. Third, antgonistic or diffused trend of nationalist thoughts became united as an anti-imperial nationalism, having influenced by ethnic sentiment and patriotism after Japanese ruining of Korean sovereignty in the period of 1905-1910.
