Abstract

It is more and more difficult for the substantive theory of truth to stand up against the powerful theory of minimalism about truth. But we can find a few persons who urge that truth can not help but have a substantive property, including Donald Davidson. According to him, the concept of truth is an indispensible theoretical term in any conceivable theory of meaning aiming to describe how a language functions and how its sentences and other expressions are thereby determined as having the meanings that they have. That is, the concept of truth is an essential one that plays a central role at the starting point of interpretation. Nonetheless, Davidson accepts neither that truth is a norm nor that it is a goal of inquiry. But I will argue that the face of truth can exist both as a starting point of understanding and as a goal of inquiry. My claim is not so much creative in that fundamental arguments are fully dependent on Bilgrami’s point of view about truth. However, I believe it is significant to show that Bilgrami’s theory can be used as a mediation for combining the truth as a starting point of interpretation and the truth as a goal of inquiry, and then to expose the limitations of Davidson’s separation of the two truths. This paper will look into Minimalist, Davidson’s, and Rorty’s theories of truth in turn which commonly insist that truth can’t be a goal of inquiry with different reasons. Futhermore, I will summarize Bilgrami’s theory which holds the opposite position to these three persons and return to Davidson to say what he had missed.
