Abstract
This article seeks to identify major challenges facing the new fledgling Chinese leadership on domestic and foreign fronts and provides short-term prospects for stability of Chinese politics. On the domestic front, despite some concerns to the contrary, President Hu has portrayed himself as a solid, caring, practical, and reform-minded leader, campaigning for the rule of law and fighting corruption. Key to three main goals of domestic policy (political stability, economic growth, and social integration), however, boils down to the theoretical campaign of changing the status of the Chinese Communist Party -- Shan Ge Dai Biao Lun. China's external environment is also replete with thorny issues: hegemonic competition with both the US and Japan, the unpredictable course of the North Korean crisis, and the reunification of China issue. Relationship with the US, however, makes or breaks the Hu leadership and shapes Chinese politics in the months ahead. This article concludes that failure to address the issues above on two fronts in a balanced way may complicate future efforts to reform.
