Abstract
Confronted with pluralism of contemporary society, the politics of equality draws attention again as an important pending question. However, what is at issue is that two typical streams of thought on equality now tend to run largely in isolation from one another. Recent debates centering around this are represented by the politics of redistribution and the politics of difference or recognition. This paper aims to outline the shifting analyses of equality and examine the implications of the debate for the future of normative political theory. Analyses of economic inequality proceed untouched by any thoughts on diversity and difference while analyses of the conditions for equal citizenship barely engage with economic concerns. Thus, normative work on economic equality runs the risk of detachment from the pressing concerns of contemporary egalitarian politics, while challenging new work on what it means for different groups to participate as equals in civil society risks forgetting that there are economic conditions for this. This paper argues that normative political theory should restore the balance between the politics of redistribution and the politics of recognition and that what is needed is to unite them by a principle of solidarity based on recognition as much as on redistribution.
