Abstract
This article examines US policy towards East Asia during the Vietnam War era as a way of putting the current war in Iraq into a historical perspective. This paper pays particular attention to the distorting effects of the Vietnam War on US policy towards East Asia at large. The basic motivation behind the US intervention into Vietnam was to contain the expansion of Communist China’s influence in the East Asian region and to prevent Japan from tilting towards the Communist camp. America’s ever deepening involvement in the Vietnam War during the mid-1960s, however, confused the order of things. Washington’s obsession made these goals almost lost. It seemed that the war itself became the aim of the US war efforts. Meanwhile, Washington could not materialize the possibility of improving the relationship with Beijing. Also, the Vietnam war became one of the important sources which heightened tension in the US-Japan alliance relationship.
