인상형성에서 인지양식에 따른 희석효과의 개인차: 도덕성과 유능성을 중심으로

초록

본 연구에서는 한국인들이 도덕성과 유능성을 기준으로 인물의 인상을 형성할 때 희석효과, 즉 판단과 관련된 핵심 정보만 제시되는 경우에 비하여 비핵심 정보가 함께 제시될 때 핵심 정보의 진단가가 감소하는 효과가 나타나는지 살펴보았다. 더불어, 범주화 과제를 통해 측정한 개인의 인지양식(분석적 사고 대 종합적 사고)에 따라 희석효과의 크기가 달라지는지 알아보았다. 연구참가자들은 도덕성과 유능성을 진단할 수 있게 해주는 핵심 정보만이 제시되는 조건, 핵심 정보에 더하여 2개의 비핵심 정보가 제시되는 조건, 그리고 핵심 정보에 더하여 8개의 비핵심 정보가 제시되는 조건 가운데 하나에 무선할당 되었다. 연구참가자들의 인지양식은 Na와 Nisbett(2010)에서 소개된 범주화 과제(triad task)로 측정되었다. 연구 결과, 비핵심 정보 개수(0개 vs. 2개 vs. 8개)에 따라 도덕성과 유능성 평가 점수를 비교하였을 때 조건 간 유의미한 차이가 관찰되지 않았다. 그러나 범주화 과제를 사용하여 측정한 개인의 인지양식이 조절효과를 나타내었다. 구체적으로, 분석적 사고를 많이 하는 사람들의 경우 비핵심 정보 개수가 0개였던 조건에 비하여 8개였던 조건에서 인물의 도덕성과 유능성을 유의미하게 낮게 평가하는 희석효과를 보였다. 그러나 이와 같은 차이는 종합적 사고를 많이 하는 사람들에게서는 관찰되지 않았다. 본 연구의 의의는 희석효과의 한계 조건을 규명하였다는 데 있다. 마지막으로, 인지양식 측정의 다각화 및 결과의 일반화와 일상적 현실성 확보를 위한 추가적인 경험적 연구의 필요성을 논의하였다.

Abstract

This study tested whether the dilution effect, that is, the diagnosticity of information getting decreased when it is presented with non-diagnostic information, would manifest itself in Koreans when they form impressions of others. In addition, this study examined whether the dilution effect would be moderated by individuals’ thinking style (i.e., holistic vs. analytic cognition). Results showed that overall the dilution effect was not observed in evaluations of personal morality and competence. However, results also revealed that as expected, individuals’ thinking style moderated the dilution effect in such a way that analytic thinkers showed the typical dilution effect, that is, the reduction of positivity in evaluations of personal morality and competence when diagnostic information is presented together with non-diagnostic information, whereas holistic thinkers didn't. Implications of these results for social cognition as well as future directions are discussed.
