Abstract
Since Jesus’ teaching to treat others as we want to be treated had acquired the status of the ‘golden rule’ in 17th century Europe, there has been continued debates over the semantic differences and the merits or demerits of the positive and negative forms of the golden rule in the East as well as the West. The initial feeling of shock among the Christian missionaries at the fact that Confucius presented his principle of shu 恕 about four centuries before their Savior either led to the admiration for the Chinese civilization or the disparagement that Confucius’ principle of shu is inferior to that of Jesus’ because shu, a negative formulation of the golden rule as that of the Jews’, is no more than a principle of justice for proscribing evils, while Jesus’ golden rule is intended to encourage good deeds toward others based on love and benevolence. The purported inferiority of the ‘silver rule’ to the ‘golden rule’ has been criticized by many scholars from both the East and the West. However, there are also arguments that the Confucian tradition has preferred the negative to the positive form of the golden rule, because the former fits better the spirit of Confucianism that is wary of epistemological and ethical hubris, has a belief in the goodness of human nature, and attaches greater importance to the prevention of evils than the promotion of the good. In this essay I critically review these arguments and alternatively argue that the Confucian tradition has regarded the positive and the negative forms of the golden to be equally important, and that this fact contains intriguing philosophical implications especially from the perspectives of metaethics and moral psychology.
