A Study on Principles and Strategy for ICZM in Korea

Abstract

There are a multitude of issues and problems in coastal zone management in Korea such as coastal development, wetland loss, deterioration of water quality, decreasing of fisheries stocks, limits of public access, etc. Recently highly centralized ICZM has been introduced in Korea. The principles of ICZM such as integration, adaptive management, planning function, etc. are not being effectively applied in Korea because there are so many barriers between the ICZM program and other relevant sectors. In this article, a gradual strategy is suggested to tackle the obstacles in the implementation phase of a national coastal management program in Korea.
