Abstract

Changes in the environment at home and aboard as well as rapid advancements in ocean technology are suggesting that a great shift in the perception of the national marine sector and the implementation of new policy measures take place. This situation demands that researchers provide policymakers with coherent and pertinent information regarding the role of the marine sector. This study employs input-output (I-O) analysis to examine the role of the marine sector in the national economy. The paper, therefore, has two major goals. The first is the development of a static I-O framework for looking into the role of the marine sector in the short run. The second goal is obtaining at least a preliminary indication of the role of the marine sector. This study pays particular attention to the marine sector by taking the sector as exogenous and then investigating the economic impacts of it. Finally, the authors present the results which address production-inducing effects and supply-shortage effects of the maritime sector, inter-sector linkage effects of 32 sectors, and the pervasive effects of price change in the marine sector.
