Abstract

This study aims to show the process and results of the observation of laver farming facilities at the Gang-Seo region at city of Busan and the West Coast by the SPOT-5 satellite during a 2-month period between January and February of 2004.Contents of the reading are as follows: First, the status of the actual number of farming facilities versus licensed number of facilities. Second, over-installed facilities versus licensed number of facilities. Third, numbers of abandoned facilities and non-licensed facilities. The area of photographing new satellite images were chosen at 12 locations, which encompassed 47,687ha covering 88.3% of all licensed laver farming areas (54,027ha).The results show that the actual number of facilities installed are 162,072, which exceeded the number of licensed facilities by 24.4%. In 12 newly photographed areas, actual numbers of facilities totalled 178,823, which exceeded licensed facilities by 27.3%. However, laver farming facilities were less installed than the number of licensed facilities by 24.9% in 10 non-photographed areas. In particular, three areas - Gunsan, Haenam, and Wando - comprised 69.8% of the total number of over-installed facilities. It has been thought that the phenomenon of over-installed farming facilities is prevalent. However, the results show interestingly that the licensed numbers of facilities per unit area were installed in most areas and in only 3 areas were they over-installed. The ratio of facilities in licensed farming areas averaged 42.3% and the ratio of facilities versus the actual number of facilities was 33.3%, which indicate most facilities are installed in the outer fringes of licensed areas. This study delves into current problems in laver farms and lends useful implications for relevant policies.
