Abstract
The Revision in Lionel Trilling’s “Freud and Literature” The aim of this paper is to compare the first-published and revised text of Lionel Trilling's famous essay, "Freud and Literature" in The Liberal Imagination: Essays on Literature and Society(1950) and suggest his probable reasons for making the changes in terms of textual criticism. Even though Trilling rarely changed the fundamental meaning of original essay, Trilling's constant revising activities were admirable. He corrected several typographical errors and he changed a lot of minor words, phrases sentence patterns, etc. by deleting unnecessary or awkward ones and adding new examples, new information and new ideas especially in he introductory parts. The ability to revise is the talent for spotting what is out of place, illogical, vague, or unconvincing. Nothing seems to be more valuable to a writer, but it is developed, I think, only through the repeated act of revising and changing. Trilling's "distinguished" prose is the result of his constant and laborious revision. As for as Trilling is concerned, the process of revision is central in refinement of writing and in the development of the writing skills.
