초록

This paper, with an emphasis placed on Shakespeare’s rhetorical strategies, makes an attempt to read The Rape of Lucrece by way of analyzing the formal and structural principles of Shakespearean language. This approach sheds new light on Tarquin’s mind, which operates on several different levels. It also argues that the construction of the rhetoric is correlated to the thematic design of the poem. Tarquin’s mind is displayed by Shakespeare’s microscopic attention to every movement of his heart and mind, which reveals what he is: his mentality, his attitude toward life, and his relationship with people as prince. The reason that people continue to appreciate the poem through ages is, in this work, Shakespeare illustrates what man is: that is, Shakespeare’s rhetorical technique reflects the way people reason with their wrong doings, shifting the blame onto the victim. Thus, Tarquin’s absurd logic in his rationalization detected later in the poem is not out of character. Shakespeare gives us a full picture of Tarquin’s disposition before showing the rape scene.
