Abstract

This study used latent growth curve modeling to investigate the trajectories of aggression and internalizing problems in children of divorced parents and those of married parents. The children ranged in age from 4th grade to 8th grade. The effects of early parent attachment, friend attachment, teacher attachment, self-esteem, self-control, and child rearing attitudes on aggression and internalizing problems were also investigated. Data was employed from the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS), a longitudinal study following students for 5 years. The results showed that, the aggression trajectory for children of divorced parents was an increasing model, whereas the aggression trajectory for children of married parents was a 1-4 phase change model. The internalizing problem trajectory for both groups was a late increasing model. Individual differences in the aggression and internalizing problems' initial levels and the changes were all significant. Second, in divorced families, self-control, and self-esteem influenced initial levels and the changes in aggression, whereas child- rearing attitudes influenced levels of change. For married couples, self-control, self-esteem, child- rearing attitudes influenced both initial levels and the levels of change. Parent attachment was significantly related to the initial levels. Third, for internalizing problems, self-control and parent attachment influenced the initial levels in divorced families. For the children of married couples, self-esteem, self-control, child-rearing attitudes and friend attachment influenced the initial levels and the levels of change. Further implications and research issues are discussed.
