본 연구는 지체장애 여성들의 양육경험을 살펴보고 이에 대한 사회 복지적 접근을 위한 기초자료를 제시하고자 하는 것이 목적이다. 이를 위해 연구자들은 D시에 거주하고 있는 지체장애여성 11명을 대상으로 2011년 2월부터 9월까지 약 8개월에 걸쳐 심층 인터뷰를 시도해 자료를 수집하였다. 수집된 자료는 Strauss와 Corbin의 근거이론방법을 활용하여 분석하였으며 그 결과, 총 136개의 개념, 32개의 하위범주, 그리고 12개의 범주로 상정할 수 있었다. 본 연구를 통해 드러난 여성장애인의 양육경험의 중심 현상은 ‘위축’이었으며, 인과적 조건은 ‘양육에서의 한계 경험’, 심리내적 조건은 ‘미안함’, ‘노심초사’, 환경적 조건은 ‘장애인에 대한 편견’, ‘경제적 상황’, ‘지지체계’, 작용/상호작용 전략은 ‘최선을 다하는 나’, ‘가족 간의 상호작용’, ‘장애수용에 대한 인식제고’, 마지막으로 결과는 ‘승화된 장애’, ‘해소되지 않는 굴레’로 각각 상정되었다. 또한 지체장애 여성들의 양육 경험의 핵심 범주는 ‘미안함을 채워주기 위한 노력 속에서 승화된 장애’로 상정하였다. 이 같은 결과를 바탕으로, 연구자들은 여성장애인의 양육에 대한 사회적 인식 개선, 지지체계의 활성화, 자녀의 나이를 고려한 생애주기 양육 지원 체계의 구축, 그리고 역량강화프로그램의 개발 등을 제언하였다.
Abstract
The purposes of this study were to explore the child-rearing experiences of physically disabled mothers and to suggest appropriate social work interventions for alleviating the difficulties they face in the nurturing process. In-depth interviews with 11 participants were conducted from February to September 2011. The qualitative data that were collected was analyzed based on the grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin. The analysis of the data resulted in 136 concepts, 32 subcategories and 12 categories. A theoretical model of exploring the meaning of child-rearing among physically disabled mothers showed six major factors as follows: “withdrawal” as a phenomenon; the “experiencing of limitation in mothering” as a causal condition; “remorse” and “constant worries” as psychological conditions; “prejudice toward disabled women”, “financial situation”, and “social supports” as contextual conditions; “putting forth every ounce of my energy”, “interactions among family members”, and “enhancing the recognition of disability acceptance” as action/interaction strategies; the “sublimation of disability” and “unsolved restraint” as the consequences of action/interaction strategies. Finally, “sublimating disability in an attempt to compensate for remorse” was the core category in the child-rearing experiences of physically disabled women. Based on these results, the authors suggested several social work implications such as enhancement of social recognition toward disabled mothers, the activation of social supports, the development of child-rearing support systems based on a life-cycle perspective, and the development of empowerment programs for women with physical disabilities.
