Abstract

While women suffering from spousal violence experience hardships in psychosocial functioning and living, they also exert positivity, including positive emotions and cognition to pursue a better life. Existing psychosocial interventions focus mainly on these women's problems, neglecting the fact that a decrease in dysfunction does not necessarily accompany an increase in positivity thus interventions need to consider both positivity and dysfunction in relation to issues of the self and the women's marriage and spouse. In this context, this study examined different aspects of the effects of the strengths-based solution-focused individual therapy(SFIT) on the positivity and dysfunction of women suffering from spousal violence, using both quantitative and qualitative data. As the results show, there were significant levels of improvement in hopefulness and positivity towards the spouse/marriage, and of reduction in depression and negativity towards the spouse/marriage of those participants; however, non- participants demonstrated a significant reduction only in anxiety. The change of achievement of the goal was significant for the participants, but not for the non-participants. According to the respondents to the qualitative evaluation, the SFIT was helpful in enabling them to have hope, to take care of herself, and to have a positive life orientation. Based on these findings, the effects specific to the participants of the SFIT in comparison with the non-participants were discussed, and implications were suggested with regard to social work practice and research methodology, and the limitations of this study.
