Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the relationship with original family of the unmarried mom on the unmarried mom’s depression through the unmarried mom’s parenting efficacy as well as the unmarried mom’s perceived experience of discrimination. Method: The study was based on a survey using 300 unmarried single moms who are rearing children younger than those in the 3rd grade of elementary school. Results: The results showed that the mediation effect was significant after controlling for the household’s income and the age of the first child of the unmarried single mom. Specifically, the relationship with the unmarried single mom’s original family is negatively associated with the unmarried single mom’s depression through parenting efficacy and unmarried mom’s perceived experience of discrimination. Conclusion: The results suggest that the relationship with the original family helps to reduce the unmarried single mom’s depression by through enhancing parenting efficacy and reducing perceived experiences of discrimination.
