Abstract
The ways in which India embraced football from British colonialism differed across regions. In this article, I argue that these differences have influenced the varying levels of football’s popularity in India, with a comparison between Bengal and Punjab. While football was employed as a tool to integrate Punjabi martial elites into British rule, Bengal developed football as part of a nationalist project. Notably, Bengal became the focal point of Indian football’s glory days after independence. I support these arguments using the frameworks and theories of “body politics.”
