Abstract
This study examines the learner's views on the pedagogical efficacy of multimedia technology applied to Chinese classroom teaching, in an attempt to understand how multimedia materials have been used and what needs to be done to better utilize them. The results of the survey conducted for the present study show that students, regardless of their Chinese proficiency levels, tend to think that multimedia technology, when used appropriately, makes their learning more effective and enjoyable. In particular, students think that multimedia materials such as graphics, DVDs, and CDs facilitate their speaking and listening practices. On the other hand, they do not appear to think that multimedia technology is used in an effective way in grammar and composition practices.The results of the survey also reveal that despite the increasing use of the computer on a daily basis, students are not making the most of it for studying Chinese. Nonetheless, it is found that the more students use the computer on a regular basis, the more do they think that they benefit from multimedia technology, both in and out of classroom settings. It is also interesting to observe that while the demand for the learner's autonomy in second language teaching/learning has been emphasized a great deal, students still perceive that the learning in classroom settings is still important and that instructors play a crucial role in improving their language skills. Furthermore, students are aware that the use of multimedia technology can lead to very different results depending on how the instructor incorporates it in teaching. The findings of this study call for more discussions regarding how instructors of Chinese can meet the rapidly increasing need for effective applications of multimedia materials in teaching Chinese in this digital era.
