Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of CAI using a reciprocal peer tutoring strategy on student conceptual understanding, retention of concepts, learning motivation, and perception of instruction. Ninety-one seventh graders at a co-ed middle school were assigned to a control, cooperative CAI (Coop-CAI), and reciprocal peer tutoring CAI (RPT-CAI) groups. The students were taught about the motion of molecules. In the two CAI groups, two students with differing levels of prior science achievement were paired in a dyad. The students in the Coop-CAI and RPT-CAI groups were taught with a learner-controlled animation CAI, using cooperative learning and reciprocal peer tutoring strategy, respectively. The results revealed that the conception test scores of the two CAI groups, regardless of gender, were significantly higher than those of the control group. The conception test scores of the RPT-CAI group were especially higher than those of the Coop-CAI group. Retention test scores of female students in the two CAI groups were significantly higher than those of the control group, while those of male students did not produce statistically significant differences among the three groups. Significant interactions between the instruction and the gender were found in the tests of 'relevance' and 'confidence', which were subcategories of the learning motivation test. The student positively perceived instructions done in the two CAI groups. For the RPT-CAI group, female students showed more positive perceptions of the instruction than male students.
