Abstract

This dissertation is intended to be one of the series of researches on the tracks of modern Chinese proses, with an emphasis on several representative writers either before or after the year 1949. It is proposed to comb the spiritual phenomena that occured in the history of modern Chinese proses, to uncover the homogeneity across time, as well as the heterogeneity due to the changes of time and political background.In 20th century Chinese proses, a lot of essayists took natural scenery, primitive customs and exotic flavor as aesthetic objects. Contrasted with social upheaval, temporal lamentation and personal obscurity, they expressed admiration for heroes, craving for primitive way of life, worship of nature and eulogy to heterogeneous culture. They sought frame of references for life and existence in the grand geographical environment, through which they gained lively and strong spiritual support. Defamiliarization is a frequently adopted measure, which elicited the reflections and introspections on the part of readers. They have a strong sense of subjectivity and hold hostility against the alienation of human beings. When money bought everything, they turned on the path of human spirit, with a view of creating Eden in their own hearts.
