Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome is clusterings of coronary risk factors. Many studies indicate that body fat distribution especially visceral adipose tissue has an important role in development of metabolic syndrome. This study investigated association of metabolic risk factors and body fat distribution measured by CT in women. Methods From April 2001 to December 2005 we analyzed data of 57 women aged more than 19 years old who visited the obesity clinic of Dankook University Hospital and underwent abdominal fat CT, blood test, bioimpedence analysis and anthropometric measurement. Results Compared to the low visceral fat group, frequencies of metabolic risk factors except for high fasting glucose were increased in high visceral fat group. After adjusted for age and BMI, odds ratios for metabolic risk factors were increased more in high visceral fat group than in low visceral fat group, and odds ratio for high triglyceride(odds ratio=7.3 95% CI: 1.2-45.3, P=0.033) had a statistical significance. Means of visceral fat area were significantly increased as the number of metabolic risk factors increased.(Ptrend=0.000) Stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that visceral fat was an independent variable predicting clusterings of metabolic risk factors.(β=0.013, P=0.000) Conclusions Visceral adipose tissue was associated with metabolic risk factors, and visceral adipose tissue was an independent predictor of clusterings of metabolic risk factors.
